The Julianakanaal is filled with water again! Two billion litres of water were siphoned into the canal within a week. The temporary dam is now being dismantled and on 11 April the first commercial shipping will be allowed onto the canal again, after eight months of closure.
Pleasure craft will not be allowed on the canal again until the temporary dam has been completely demolished.
The Julianakanaal is part of the Maasroute, an important shipping route to ports in Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands. Rijkswaterstaat is making the Maasroute suitable for so-called two-barge pusher shipping (class Vb vessels). These are vessels that are 190 m long, 11,4 m wide and have a maximum draught of 3,5 m.
The Roermond District Council is also easily accessible from the south.
You no longer have to sail over the Belgian canals to sell your boat or sail to the south of Limburg (or further up the Meuse) with your new boat. It also saves our Belgian and French customers who come from or via Liège a whole detour.
