Pack your boat, prepare the route and go. During a sailing holiday you get the chance to explore the waters of the Netherlands or abroad. Do you want to get the most out of this holiday? Then discover these tips and tricks for a well-prepared sailing holiday.
Map out a nice route
It is a nice idea to leave a tight schedule behind during a holiday, but for a sailing holiday a mapped out route is essential. Do not only consider which places and highlights you want to visit, but also think about the practicalities. Many bridges and locks have fixed opening hours and are therefore not always available, because there is no crew present. So check in advance which route you want to take, which bridges and locks you will encounter and when they are accessible.
Choose a good marina as your home port
It is possible to sail a continuous route during your sailing holiday, but also consider using a specific marina as your home port. There are various marinas in the Netherlands and abroad with an ideal location. From here you can make multiple day trips, so that you can explore the area and still be assured of a fixed resting place. This significantly reduces the administrative work around your sailing holiday.
Think about your boating license
You don't need a boating license when you're sailing quietly in a boat of less than 15 meters long, with a maximum speed of 20 kilometers per hour. This is ideal for an afternoon of fishing on a lake, but during your boating holiday you may want to go a bit faster. With small boating license 1 you can safely sail on inland waters, while small boating license 2 gives you access to the larger waters and lakes. Don't forget to pack this boating license and always have it with you during your holiday.
Invest in good equipment
For recreational boaters, a lot of equipment is not mandatory, but technical gadgets make your trips a lot easier and safer. For example, a marine radio helps you to communicate with others, while a radar warns you when there is another moving object nearby. Keep in mind that at least one person on board must have a marine radio certificate in order to be allowed to use this device. Also consider a chart plotter to keep an eye on your surroundings and sailing route, so that you never lose your way.
Don't forget your safety
Safety is important on a boat, so don't forget to pack boots with a good non-slip sole. Strong gloves made of leather or rubber are also essential on a boat, especially when tying and casting lines. Are there children on board? Then pack suitable life jackets and don't forget to have a railing installed on the boat.
Check the tanks regularly
There is nothing more annoying than suddenly running out of water or fuel during a long trip. So make it a habit to regularly check your boat's tanks. Check if there is enough fuel before you leave and fill up the water tank if necessary. Empty the toilet tank when you are in a designated area so that you do not run the risk of it becoming too full.
Stuff for fun activities
When packing, don't forget that you're also going to have a lot of fun during your sailing holiday. So also pack things for fun activities, such as a board for SUPing or a large swimming ring to float around in. Animal lovers should take binoculars with them to spot the many birds and wildlife along the shore. Of course, a sailing holiday is also perfect for an afternoon of fishing, so don't forget your fishing gear.
Bring some tasty food
A holiday is not complete without good food and that also applies to a boating holiday. Make the most of the water by taking a grill with you on the boat, so that you can grill your freshly caught fish immediately. On warm days, nothing beats a cool box full of fresh fruit and cold drinks, while in the chilly evenings you might prefer to enjoy a hot cup of chocolate milk.
